Celebrities and Sports Stars Who Gave Back on 9/11
When the tragedy of 9/11 hit New York City in 2001, people came out by the thousands to offer help and support in any way that they could. Firefighters, EMS workers, police officers, Red Cross volunteers, and regular citizens rose to the occasion. In the midst of all the chaos, there were also a handful of charitable celebrities who wanted to get involved. Actress Kathleen Turner served meals at New York Hospital and helped to deliver critical supplies to rescue workers at Ground Zero. "Being a volunteer at ground zero was a life changing experience for me in many ways," she said in a documentary. Other stars who offered support include Robin Williams, Sigourney Weaver, Susan Sarandon, Tim Robbins, Alanis Morrisette, Greg Gerson, and Kenny Sheehan.
In the sports world, we saw so many players doing their part to help out. The New York Giants were scheduled to play at home against the Green Bay Packers. Instead, they spent that Sunday distributing water and food to rescue crews. Mark Cuban, owner of the Dallas Mavericks, donated $1 million dollars to the families of New York firefighters and police officers that lost their lives.
