Check Out the Scandalous Gossip Girl Ad Campaign

Friday April 11, 2008
Have you seen the latest Gossip Girl ad campaign for the CW? These new ads are practically bordering on pornography and the characters in the show are supposed to be mere high school teenagers. Chace Crawford, Blake Lively, and Leighton Meester are clearly prepared to bare it all in the name of ratings.

Not only do they show two of the lead stars engaging in intimate activities, but flashed across the photo are the letters "OMFG" in bold print. You don't have to be a genius to know that the letters don't stand for something cutesy or clean. Don't get me wrong, I'm a huge fan of Gossip Girl, but this might be a bit much. What's your take? Have they taken things too far or has this become the norm?

I am also a big fan of the show but this might be crossing the fine line. Kids are watching this and it sends a clear message to them. And kids are very easily influenced.

This is so terrible…what happened to the days when tv stars would fight for their characters to remain virgins because of the influence it would have amoung the young viewers watching. I am embarrassed for the network that this is how they feel they must attract viewers.

Who cares how they choose to advertise? Bottom line remains that this show is awesome. Don’t be jealous that they are doing well.

(4) JK says:

No one is making comments because they are ‘doing well’ and people are trying to cut them down. Their demographic is kids in HS and college kids and 20 somethings. While this may be ok for the latter, the this is obviously inappropriate for the younger set, especially for a show thats on at 8pm as opposed to 10pm. Shame on CW.

(5) Franklin James says:

i am quite concerned that viewing these images will subject me to criminal prosecution for posessing child pornography on my personal computer.

(6) Emma says:

Ummm… have you guys opened a magazine or turned on the tv lately? This is nothing compared to some perfume ads or pop-tart videos that are most certainly targeted to teens and tweens. It’s not as provocative as everyone is making it out to be.
Whether kids watch the show or not it up to their parents – not to the CW. And I know for a fact that the show attracts viewers from an older demographic as well – it’s water-cooler material! I for one can’t wait til it comes back on the 21st.

If it’s so bothersome, don’t look at it.

(8) Lucy says:

MN- this popped up on my Yahoo mail page and it can’t be closed. I’m not a prude, but I don’t need or want to look at it every time I check my e-mail. And considering that 1 in 4 teens has an STD, I think it’s an irresponsible ad campaign.

(9) Rachel says:

“MN says:
If it’s so bothersome, don’t look at it. ”

Did you even read what she wrote? The issue isn’t that it’s bothersome. It’s whether or not it’s inappropriate for the age group it’s targeting.

(10) NB says:

I might actually tune in and watch an episode of this.

(11) Aaron says:

I think any use of the f-word in a show that is watched by tweens and teens is reprehensible. I hear the word hundreds of times a day at the school where I teach. We have even had career day representatives refuse to return next year. No wonder the kids think society approves of this behavior.

(12) Jade says:

I think this sort of advertising is inappropriate for teenagers. Not only the use of OMFG is crude and vulgar but the sexual imagery is pretty sexual in nature. If this were the ad campaign for a movie it would be rated R.

May 11, 2008 at 3:46 pm
(13) MN says:

The age group that its targeting is hardly ignorant to this sort of imagery. That age group also has parents that can decide whether it is inappropriate or not. It’s no one else’s business to do so.

Yes, I did read it, by the way, and I felt that it was making mountains out of molehills.

(14) Nate says:

Hah…I noticed there’s not a whole lot of men posting. Anyway, I was wondering how many of you hypocrites actually have children that are high school age. And if you do, how many are virgins?
