"I wasn't told by Barbara (one of the producers) that my contract wasn't being renewed. I was told on April 21, my agent was told the night before. Al (her husband) flew out to Phoenix where I was to tell me himself. They already knew in November."
Star claims that she was told in April that her contract was not being renewed and that for two months, she kept quiet. Until she said, "it became personal in the media" and the tabloid comments began to hurt. She was scheduled to announce her departure on Thursday, but she wanted to catch the staff by surprise as she made her speech two days early. She did exactly that and the repercussions were harsh.
What Barbara Walters said on The View the very next morning:
"And then there were three (audience chuckles). I love Star and I was trying to do everything I possibly could, up until this morning when I was betrayed, to protect her. Star gave us no warning and we were taken by surprise. The network made their decision based on a variety of reasons."
Barbara was basically trying to set the record straight and clear up any confusion from the day before. She wanted to be sure that her viewers knew exactly what happened. Most importantly, she wanted people to understand that even though she may have implied it, Star was not fired from her position. Not fired from her position? The fact remains that her contract was not renewed after 9 years and where I come from, that pretty much means one thing...you're fired!
