Jason Ray - UNC Mascot's Organ Donation

By Diana Mimon, About.com

Tribute to University of North Carolina's Mascot Jason Ray

Jason Kendall Ray was a 21-year-old senior at the University of North Carolina when his amazing life came to an abrupt end. He had been UNC's Rameses mascot for three long and happy years.

In March of 2007, Jason was attending one of the games and staying at a hotel in NJ. On March 23, Jason left his room to grab a quick bite and was accidentally struck by an SUV. Nearly 25 family members and friends kept a bedside vigil for the college student at Hackensack University Medical Center.

Sadly, Jason suffered severe head trauma and was pronounced dead only days later with his organs donated to Sharing Network of New Jersey. All told, nearly 50 lives have been saved by his generous nature.

"Jason was a wonderful son, brother and friend. He leaves behind a legacy of friendship, laughter, excitement for life and a genuine love for all the people he touched during his all-too-short life," Ray's brother, Allen Ray, said.

Donations are being accepted through the Jason Kendall Ray Memorial Fund, Concord Christian Church, 3101 Davidson Highway, Concord, NC 28027.
